The Park's History

- 1542- Alvar Nuñez
Cabeça de Vaca was one of the first Europeans
to admire the majestic Iguaçú Falls.
- 1876- André
Rebouças (an engineer) issues a proposal,
which he sent to the Imperor, for the creation of
the Guaira National Park.
- 1916 - The Father
of Aviation, Santos Dumont, visits the area and
is very impressed. He later influences the government
of Paraná for the creation of a park and
the area, which was then private property, is expropriated.
- 1930 - The expropriated
area is expanded in 1916 in order to enable the
creation of the Iguaçú National Park.
- 1939 - President
Getulio Vargas officially creates the Iguaçú
National Park.
- 1971 and 1972 -
The survey activities for the expropriation of the
areas to be indemnified are completed.
- 1978 - The last
settler leaves the expropriated areas.
- 1980 - The rural
areas inside the PNI are declared to be public assets
by Decree nr. 84.653 and are expropriated in accordance
with the legislation.
- 1981 - The Management
Plan for the Iguaçú National Park
is put in practice (main regulation instrument)
- 1982 - The Public
Use Plan is put in practice.
- 1986 - The Unesco
(The United Nations Organization for Education,
Science and Culture) lists the Iguaçú
National Park as Natural Heritage of Humanity.
- 1994 - The Emergency
Plan in put in practice.
- 1997 - Reviewing
of the Management Plan is started in order to evaluate
the procedures implemented in 1981.
- 1999 - The work
for remodeling the INP is started and the reviewing
of the Park's Management Plan is completed.
- 2001 - Beginning
of operations of the Park's new visitation structure.
