The Flora
|

|
The Flora at the Iguaçú National
Park has an amazing diversity. There are thousands
of species found in the Subtropical Pluvial
Flora.
The Park's flora is basically made up of two
groups: the semidecidual seasonal forest and
the araucaria woods, which make up the continuous
vegetation cover and resemble a giant green
cover which is a priceless genetic base for
the future.

In the trails, the visitor will
find the tranquility, the clean air and lots of
bio-energy that are provided by the thick woods
of large trees such as wild fig trees, Brazilian
walnut trees, redwoods, jerivas and heart-of-palm.
Other species may reach a height of 30m such as
the laurel tree, the angico tree, the cedar tree,
the peroba tree, the canafistula tree, as well
as the timbauvas and rosemary trees.
|
| The smaller trees that make up the
intermediate strata are the xaxim, heart-of-palm,
wild orange and the gum tree. Grass, ferns, herbs
and shrubs cover the soil. Epiphyte such as bromeliads,
orchids, araceae and liana spread out as far as
the dossel. The vegetation on the banks of rivers
is made up of cane tree and taquarucu, as well
as heart-of-palm and typical swamp grass.
The Araucaria forest is still thriving in an
area located east of the Park, and the main
specimen there is the Paraná pine tree
(Araucária angustifólia), which
is the symbol tree of the state of Paraná
and long ago abundant throughout the state.
Endangered species such as the Winter's Bark
tree and the ilex paraguaiensis are found in
the woods while the Jeriva, the Guajuvira and
the Uvaia are found in the adult pine tree forest.
