HISTORY OF THE IGUAÇÚ RANGER PLATOON
The Iguaçú National Park started
on July 28, 1916 by Decree 653 from the government
of the state of Paraná, signed by governor
AFONSO ALVES DE CAMARGO, which listed the 1,008-hectare
area on the right shore of the Iguaçú
River as a public unit. Fifteen years after,
on October 20, 1931, State Decree 2.153 expanded
the reservation from 1,008 hectares to 33,519,040
sq. meters.

Finally, on January 10, 1939, President GETÚLIO
DORNELLES VARGAS, signed Decree nr. 1.035, which read
in its article 1 the following: " The Iguaçú
National Park, located next to the Iguaçú
Falls, is hereby established and it shall be under
the supervision of the forestry service of the Agriculture
Ministry"."
This 154,500-hectare Park is therefore duly established
and it has currently an area of 185,265.5 hectares.
Due to the agreement signed between the IBDF and the
State of Paraná, on May 07, 1970, the state
took over the responsibility of ensuring the preservation
of the Flora and Fauna, the Geology and the natural
resources of the Iguaçú National Park
through the inspection by the Military Police of the
State of Paraná's Ranger Patrol Battalion,
which will keep a minimum number of 02 battalions,
under the command of a Lieutenant and reporting to
the 1st Co. of the Forest Ranger Battalion.
It was after the signing of the agreement between
the IBDF and the State of Paraná that the Iguaçú
Forest Ranger Platoon was created and assigned the
following law enforcement activities:
- Motorized Law Enforcement
through constant rounds inside the Park and its
boundaries;
- Law Enforcement on Foot:
all around tourist areas of the Falls and traffic
law enforcement by incursions and weekly stays in
the jungle;
- Boat Patrol: on patrol
boats along the Floriano, Iguaçu and Gonçalves
Dias rivers and their tributaries.
For better inspecting, the Platoon has deployed at
the following strategic spots inside de Park, known
as Forest Ranger Stations:
Central Station, Ceu Azul, Itaipu and Salto Caxias
stations, which have the following equipment:
- 01 light vehicle (Palio Adventure);
- 03 S 10 Chevrolet pick-up trucks and 03 TOYOTAS
HILUX;
- 02 19 marajo 90 HP motorboats;
- 01 85HP barge;
- 01 15HP low bed barge;
- 01 15 HP high bed barge, 01 08 HP outboard engine;
- 04 station VHF/FM radios, one in each ranger station;
- 08 mobile radios, one on each vehicle;
- 05 portable VHF/FM radios;

OBJECTIVE
To carry out the Preventive, Ostensive and
Repressive Law Enforcement in the forests, water bodies
and to ensure the compliance with laws designed to
protect the fauna, flora and the environment, to maintain
public order and the exercise of governmental powers.
To enforce the preservation of the natural resources
of the territory in order to avoid soil degradation
and environmental and climatic unbalance, which may
seriously jeopardize future generations.
